There's nothing quite like the Kentucky Derby. It's much more than a Thoroughbred race. It's an American tradition that dates back to the 1800's.
The Kentucky Derby is a stakes race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses, staged yearly in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race currently covers one and one-quarter miles (2.012 km) at Churchill Downs; colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg), fillies 121 pounds (55 kg). The race, known as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" for its approximate time length, is the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in the United States. It typically draws around 155,000 fans
The announced attendance was 155,632, the third largest in Derby history. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom was a special guest of Churchill Downs and attended the race in her first visit to the United States since 1991.
Street Sense won the Kentucky Derby, paying $11.80 to win on a $2 wager. He rallied from a second-to-last deficit to beat Hard Spun by 2 1/2 lengths. This win made him the first winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile ever to win the Kentucky Derby and the first Two-year-old Champion to win the Derby since Spectacular Bid in 1979.
