Fans of the game and of sports betting should not limit their hockey wagering just because of geography.
Another key difference is that when betting on hockey, there are no point spreads. This is because most hockey games around the world are settled by just a goal or two, making the idea of a point spread unnecessary. So in hockey wagering, there is no spread to beat. If you have placed a bet, and the team you wagered on wins, then you win. If the team you wagered on loses, then you lose. This basically means that in the world of hockey wagering, there are no straight bets, only line bets. Additionally, in hockey you can also place bets on who will be winning or losing at the end of the first period. For example, you can make a bet saying that Dallas will be ahead of New Jersey at the end of the first period. However, if you think that New Jersey will rally to win the whole thing, you can place a separate bet stating just that. Over/Under bets or totals are also common in hockey wagering as they are in other sports betting. The following is a list of key factors to look for when making a wager:
1) Who is between the pipes for the two teams playing. A goalie is the single most important player on the ice and his performance translates to the success of a team on that night. Often times favorable situations occur when a back-up goalie gets the start. I would encourage you to check local papers or websites each day for any information about who will be starting in net.
2) Teams playing consecutive games on the road. This is one of the best spots to play a home team when the visitors played the night before in a different city. They do not often get into town until early the next morning and usually do not schedule a practice in order to keep the legs fresh. Usually the visitors come in tired and slow and it affects their performance. Go against them teams and you will earn a profit.
3) Strength vs. Finesse Teams. As in any sports, defense wins and hockey is no different. While a finesse team makes crisp passes and is fun to watch, they usually do not win games against a hard checking physical team.
Hockey Betting Rules
All NHL lines are posted the day of the scheduled event. You can bet on the 1 st Period or the full game. In both cases, you can choose a team to win or bet on the total score.
FOR EXAMPLE: Using the teams(Chicago and Los Angeles), should the game be tied 2-2 at the end of regulation, and then at the end of Overtime, the game will go to a shootout. If Los Angeles wins the shootout, the final score is 3-2, Los Angeles is the winner.
When betting on the total score of a game, you must take the OVER or the UNDER. Regardless of the outcome, the combined score of the two teams will determine if you win or lose your bet. Remember, overtime will always counttowards the bet. In the case of a shootout, the team winning the shootout will have an extra goal added to their total. Using the above example, thetotal score would be 5, and the OVER would be the winning bet.
