The National Football League (NFL) is the largest and most prestigious professional American football league. It was formed by eleven teams in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association and adopted the name National Football League in 1922. The league currently consists of thirty-two teams from American cities and regions, divided evenly into two conferences (AFC and NFC), with four, four-team divisions.
Odds are basically a mathematical expectation and approximation of a certain outcome of a sporting event. Odds can take many different forms such as who is going to win the game; can they win the game by this much (a point spread line); who is going to win the division; who is going to win the race; or who is going to win the tournament.
The most popular odds in Football are moneylines and point spread. For this reason the football odds are also known as the NFL betting lines or the NFL point spread.
An example of NFL Odds: NY Giants (-3) vs. New England Pats. The number listed in parenthesis are the NFL odds. For this case, when the game between NY Giants and New England is over, 3 points are subtracted from Giants' score. This adjusted score determines the winner. For example, if the final score is Giants - 21, New England Pats - 20, Giants has obviously won the game. However, for betting purposes, we subtract 3 points from Giants and the final score for betting purposes is Giants - 19, Pats - 20. If you bet on Giants to win, you lose the bet even though Giants won the game.
If one team is thought to be worse than the other, additional points will be added to their score. If a team is thought to be better than the other, they will have points subtracted from their score.
Sportsbooks move lines to reflect betting trends to balance the betting so that the book won't lose gobs of money on a particular game or event. If a lot of money is bet on John Smith to win the French Open at 3-1, the sportsbook will move the odds on Smith down to 2-1. Here is another example: if the Raiders are getting a lot of money at -4½ the boys in the book will move Oakland up to -5 to try to tempt people to bet the other side. The sportsbook must be careful when they move the lines so as to avoid a "middle".
A middle occurs when the line moves so much one way that sharp bettors who played one way at one end of the line move bet the other way at the other end. This creates a 1 or 2 point spread between the extremes where both bets cover and the sportsbook gets nailed.

Parlays: A parlay is a bet in which you select 2 to 8 teams or totals. All selections must win or tie in order to win the wager. If any of the selections lose, your wager loses, regardless of the outcome or cancellation of the other games. If one or more selections is a tie, postponed, incomplete, cancelled or rescheduled for another day, then the wager reverts to the next lowest number. Calcule your winnings in our Parlay Calculator.
Teasers: A teaser allows the bettor to combine his bets on two or more different games. The bettor can adjust the point spreads for the two games, but realizes a lower return on the bets in the event of a win. Calcule your winnings in our Teaser Calculator.
