Basketball Wagering - Basketball Lines

Basketball Wagering

Basketball Odds - Basketball Scores

Basketball wagering is obviously not as popular as football wagering but there are gamblers that actually like it more.

When it comes to sports betting you have probably heard the term "smart money." Let's look at smart money as it applies to basketball wagering and see if it is really that smart.

Basketball wagering presents more opportunities to make money than any other sports simply for the fact that there are so many games. When it comes to smart money in basketball wagering, in the late 1980's through the mid 1990's there was truly smart money in college basketball betting from a huge betting syndicate. College basketball wagering lines would move 4 or 5 points all the time and usually those games were winners. Those days are long gone. There are really not that many betting syndicates anymore and the few that do exist don't hold much power and aren't as successful as years ago in basketball wagering.

When it comes to smart money in basketball wagering the thought process was that a syndicate or wise guy was responsible for moving the college and NBA online wagering lines. Everyone thought that someone must know something and that is why the line moved. This opinion is wrong. The people moving the college or NBA online wagering numbers rarely know anything of consequence or have any inside information. What happens today with so-called smart money moves in basketball wagering is that a group may make a play on a game but it is because they handicapped the game and saw a basketball wagering line worth taking, not because they had this so-called inside information.

What you should also know about this so-called smart money in basketball wagering is that it is not very smart at all. The long-term results have showed that the smart money does no better than any other type of basketball wagering line moves. The other part of the problem with smart money is identifying what it actually is as you look at the college or NBA online wagering line. Some people think it is anytime a college or NBA online wagering line moves more than a point from the opener it is smart money. That is totally wrong. Smart money moves may only end up being a ½ point or a point and it could be that the move comes late in the day after the public has taken the other side in basketball betting. It is very difficult to determine which moves are smart money and which ones are not and then you still might not make any money following them.

Basketball Wagering Tips

Study your teams, learn their strengths and weaknesses, know their home and road records, and evaluate them objectively. Pay attention to changes in the quality of a team from one season to the next as players get older and changes occur in personnel and coaching staffs. Salary caps and free agency make it more difficult for teams to stay at the top for long periods, so major improvement or decline from season to season is commonplace in professional sports.

Successful basketball gambling requires getting value on your bets ... basically this means getting better than the "true" odds on your team. For instance, if your objective prediction for a game suggests that the Lakers should be receiving 5 points but are in fact receiving 8, then this is a value betting proposition. In this case, the risk to reward is very much in your favor, making the Lakers a strong play.

Certain teams always have a strong public following. For years, the Chicago Bulls were onc such team, having captured the public's admiration during the Jordan years. High-value bets can often be found by betting against these teams because the oddsmakers adjust the line to reflect the expected amount of public money ... thus, the underdog is often listed with better odds or a larger pointspread than they realistically deserve.

Watch the injuries, but don't overreact to them. Judge the importance of an injured player and the quality of his back up. Remember that second-string players are often highly qualified and are especially motivated when replacing a starter, so it often pays to bet on a team missing its best player. The public normally overreacts to injuries so you may find good value in this situation. However, beware of situations where there is more than one injured stud or there is an injury to the team's captain or inspirational leader.

Sometimes a team doesn't play up to its potential and, at other times, may play well above what is indicated by their overall record - especially in critical games. Determine how important a game is to a team. If the team has already clinched a playoff spot, they may be more focused on the post-season than the present game. Conversely, a team facing a must-win situation to make the playoffs may be highly motivated. A team out to revenge a defeat earlier in the season may also be very motivated.

Make an honest assessment of a team's chances, not one based on emotions. Don't bet on a team simply because it's your favorite without considering the real odds. Be selective and remember that you will only find value betting situations in a small number of games. Betting the entire NBA schedule every week is a risky proposition at best.

Moneyline Wagers

Moneyline Wagering is simply wagering on the contest based on a given price rather than a pointspread. The team wagered on just has to win the game.

Halftime Wagers

Halftime wagering is simply a wager only on the score of the first, or second half of a contest. The line offered will be a pointspread, a moneyline, or a combination of the two.

Quarter Wagers

Wagering on quarters is simply a wager only on the score of the first, second, third or fourth quarter of a contest. These lines will be offered on marquee events, such as playoff and championship games. The line offered will be a pointspread, a moneyline, or a combination of the two.

Point Buying

This is a method of allowing the bettor to improve the pointspread of a basketball contest by actually "buying points" for the team he/she wants to wager, side or total. Bettors can buy points in 1/2 point increments up to 3 points, depending on the contest. Each 1/2 point costs the bettor an additional 10% vigorish.

Bettors may also buy points for basketball totals. In this particular game, bettors could buy an "over" wager with a maximum line move down to 188, or an "under" wager with a maximum line move up to 190.
